Screen Printing vs. Direct-to-Film (DTF) vs. Goof Proof® Transfers

What’s the Right Choice for Your Apparel Order?

1️⃣ Screen Printing

The Industry Standard for a Reason Screen printing pushes ink directly into the garment using mesh screens. Each color requires its own screen.

Why it’s great:

  • Long-lasting and highly durable
  • Lowest cost per piece on larger orders
  • Excellent opacity on dark garments
  • Professional retail finish

Best for:

  • 24+ piece uniform orders
  • Company merch programs
  • Long-term brand apparel
  • Fire departments, utilities, contractors, fundraising, schools & business promotions

If you’re ordering consistent designs at scale, screen printing is usually the most economical and professional option.

2️⃣ Direct-to-Film (DTF) Transfers

Maximum Color, Minimum Setup

DTF prints your design digitally onto a special film, which is then heat-pressed onto the garment.

Why it’s great:

  • No screen setup fees
  • Full color and gradients
  • Ideal for small orders
  • Fast turnaround
  • Works on cotton, blends, and more

Best for:

  • 1–48 piece runs, or larger quantities with full color
  • Highly detailed artwork, especially with color gradients & half-tones
  • Multi-color logos
  • Safety Vest application
  • Small brand launches
  • Rush jobs

DTF is extremely versatile and allows us to print full-color designs without the setup cost of screen printing. Not a great option for polyester shirts.

3️⃣ Goof Proof® Transfers (Heat Applied Screen Printed Transfers)

Clean, Sharp, and Great for Personalization

Goof Proof® transfers screen-printed graphics onto garments via heat application. They are basically a screen-printed transfer.

Why it’s great:

  • Quick Turn-around times
  • Great for names & numbers
  • Clean, sharp lines
  • No screens required
  • Low minimums

Best for:

  • Team and Employee uniforms
  • Employee name personalization
  • One-off shirts
  • Events

They’re called “Goof Proof®” for a reason — alignment is easier, and they’re efficient for personalization projects.

However, they are more expensive than regular DTF.

Durability Comparison

If wash life matters most:

  1. Screen Printing – Most durable over long-term industrial washing
  2. DTF – Least durable option, yet flexible with great adhesion. Great choice for small quantities with decent quality; 50-100 washes before fading or cracking
  3. Goof Proof® Transfers – Higher quality image, but more expensive than DTF. Durable, but can eventually show wear at edges with heavy washing. Feels like a painted-on screen print. Can withstand over 100 washes if cared for correctly.

So… Which Should You Choose?

It depends on:

  • Quantity
  • Artwork complexity
  • Fabric type
  • Timeline
  • Budget
  • End use (uniform vs promotional vs retail)

At BareBones WorkWear®, we often recommend:

  • Screen printing for 24+ consistent images;
  • DTF for detailed logos or mid-size orders with multiple colors and smaller quantities
  • Goof Proof® for personalization and small runs with higher standards that doesn’t require detail

Our Recommendation Process

We don’t just ask, “How many shirts?” We ask:

  • Who is wearing them?
  • How often will they be washed?
  • Is this retail fashion quality or are you on a tight budget?
  • Do you need shipping?
  • Is this for a custom portal account?

Because the right production method protects your brand image.
